Instructor Blane Bachelor

A smiling white woman, Blane Bachelor, with blonde-streaked hair and blue eyes

Blane Bachelor is a Florida-born, Berlin-based journalist who covers outdoor adventure, travel, parenting, and women doing awesome things. Her work has appeared in outlets including the New York Times, CNN, New York magazine, Outside, The Washington Post, Runner’s World, Men’s Journal, The Lonely Planet, and many others. An Air Force brat, Blane was bitten by the travel bug early, and her career in journalism has paved the way for countless (mis)adventures all over the world.

Following a stint as a newspaper sportswriter, Blane took off for Barcelona, where she taught English, learned Spanish, and started freelancing. Since then, her career has spanned three years as a senior editor at a content marketing agency, and hundreds of features, essays, and breaking news stories. Her dating advice column led to a book and an HGTV pilot that, alas, never aired.

Blane recently moved back to Europe — this time to Berlin, Germany — with her husband and young son. And yes, Bachelor is her real last name.

STUDENT REVIEWS

“The critique and feedback I’ve received from Blane have been invaluable to me. Having had no formal training in the craft, pitching has often felt like shooting nondescript arrows in the dark hoping they hit the bull’s eye that I cannot even see. Blane met me where I am, getting into the very basics of the way I form my pitches, editing them for me, pointing out words that are ambiguous or unnecessary, warning me if I’m editorializing. Her critiques have been encouraging and insightful, and have gently prodded me to push harder and do better. She has also shown me how to look at the larger picture and not get too entangled in the intricacies of the idea so that I can’t see the forest for the trees. ” — Tasneem Pocketwala

Blane’s critiques were so useful! She went into the details: the nitty gritty of the idea, stylistic issues and timeliness. Above all, I’m grateful that I did this course and thanks to Amanda for the generous scholarship.” — Arundhati Nath

“I thought Blane was excellent. I’ve taken a course before with Amanda, and loved having her as a teacher because she offers critiques at a very granular level. I found that Blane is every bit as careful and “picky” :)” — anonymous feedback
